UPDATE: City Manager Carroll to Leave May 12

In the Curioser and Curioser world that is Evanston government, it was today announced by letter to all City employees that City Manager Julia Carroll would depart effective May 12 for "health reasons." This moves up the date of departure by almost 6 weeks. CSNA officials have heard, but have not confirmed, that Assistant City Manager Rolanda Russell will be named interim City Manager, a post she previously held in Roanoke, VA when a similar situation occurred.

Ms. Carroll's surprise resignation was originally announced in a City of Evanston press release dated 12:34 pm, April 29, 2008, which stated, "City Manager Julia A. Carroll announces her resignation as City Manager effective June 27. In her resignation letter to Mayor Lorraine H. Morton, Carroll cited declining personal health as her reason for her departure from the city.

"Carroll has served as City Manager for Evanston since January 18, 2005. She said, "I have very much enjoyed my position as City Manager and will miss the great city employees, working with elected officials, and the interaction with the public.

'However, I must do what is best for me,' she said. 'I hope that the city employees and the public will respect my right to privacy as I transition from this organization. I am not going to another position, but I will take some time off to get well.' "
