Save the Haven Middle School Name!

While we wish to honor Mayor Lorraine Morton in a city-wide way, we do not wish for the name of Haven Middle School to be changed. There is no reason to erase important history when there are unnamed buildings that would serve the ENTIRE community that can be named in her honor. We originally proposed to name the soon-to-be-renovated library media center at Haven in her honor and we wish to continue to do so without changing the name of the school. Please comment or join us in this discussion! The D65 Board of Ed will be discussing this on Tueday, Feb. 17th at 7pm.

Screening of movie about special needs children

Evanston Citizens for Appropriate Special Education will present the award-winning film “Including Samuel” at 7 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 8, 2009. The film, followed by a discussion, will be shown at the Levy Center, 300 Dodge Ave. in Evanston.

Mixed/Honors Level Classes Forum at ETHS

On October 6 at 7:30 p.m. in room A-241, the ETHS PTSA is sponsoring a meeting with Dr. Eric Witherspoon and other administration members to discuss "Mixed-Level and Honors-Only Classes at ETHS: The Past, The Present and The Future."

Recent changes in the curriculum to Freshman Humanities and senior level English classes have raised questions about the changes the high school is making to the Honors and Regular level tracks.

This article in the Evanston Roundtable addresses many of these issues:

School Hours Matter to Families

After months of working to create a more "family-friendly" school calendar, there's another issue in D65 that needs our voice. On Friday, May 23rd, a note was sent home with Lincoln, Lincolnwood, and Oakton students notifying their parents that start and dismissal times will be shifting next year to bring them into alignment with other D65 elementary schools. While consistency across the District seems in theory a good thing, the problem is that the later 9:00 - 3:20 schedule is difficult for many families when it comes to coordinating work and child care arrangements.

Special Services, District 65

The following article recently appeared in the Evanston RoundTable newspaper. It was written by Cari Levin, who is the founder of CASE, a nonprofit group of parents in District 65 who are working to improve services for dsabled children in the public schools.
