Embankment Crash at McCormick/Green Bay

As of approximately 2:00 pm, Green Bay Road was closed from Simpson north to almost Central Street in response to what appeared to be a serious one-vehicle crash at McCormick Boulevard. A dark blue SUV-type vehicle appeared to have rammed head-on at some speed into the stone and cement embankment where McCormick terminates into Green Bay. Dear friends,

Hota has closed

On a Labor Day weekend walk past Hota, which replaced Jacky's on Prairie (which replaced Jacky's Bistro), we saw that it was shuttered, which seemed off for a lovely holiday weekend. The explanation is that Hota, open less than 9 months, has closed, and its liquor license is being pulled per the agenda of the 9/24/2012 City Council meeting.

Library Board votes to adopt Twig, freeze taxes

According to attendees at the Sept. 19 Library Board meeting, the board voted to take over operation of The Twig facility on Chicago Avenue, north of Main, that has been run by Evanston Public Library Friends volunteers since the closing of the South Branch in February, 2011. The plan, approved unanimously, is for existing staff and volunteers to run the facility as the Chicago & Main branch of the Evanston Public Library. A large infusion of donated funds is relied on for the bulk of the first year's operating expenses.

Prairie dropseed

Prairie dropseed, Sporobolus heterolepis, a perennial grass of the Poaceae grass family native to Illinois and the midwest, forms unique fountain-shaped tufts of dense, narrow leaves, sending up one or more shoots from the center that can reach up to 2' tall and produce lacy panicles in late summer and fall.

Chase Bank said to present downscaled proposal

Chase Bank is expected to return soon to the City of Evanston with a scaled-back proposal, limiting it mainly to the former gas station lot itself, for a branch bank at the site of the closed Citgo station at Gross Point and Crawford. CSNA members and neighbors have helped to keep residents informed of this through posts such as this 7/26/127 story on the last City Council action.

More ostrich ferns

Image:

Another view of one of the more familiar native perennials, the ostrich fern, Matteuccia struthiopteris. These ferns do splendidly in moist, shady areas. They don't like extended heat or dry soil and are hard-pressed to last all the way to the end of the summer.
